The LHS Lady Tiger Volleyball Team, 2010-2011

Essay by Mikayla Cole (LHS Class of 2013)

There are a lot of things that separate the Lady Tigers from other teams.

1. We have heart, an outstanding work ethic, and strive to win. The Lady Tigers never give up, and we encourage each other to do better. Everyone may talk about age or experience, but it is not all about either. It’s about the work ethic. Winning never gets old! The team will take a loss and build it into motivation to do better the next game.

2. The fact that we are so young also separates us from other teams. We only have one senior this year, which will lead up to a great season next year.

3. Although Coach Brad considers everyone an important player, there are a few stand out players. Sometimes, the best way you can find out about a player is to hear what her fellow teammates have to say about her. An even better way to get a feel for a player is to see what she has to say about her fellow players. I am sure everyone has great things to say about these players: Jordan Jowers, Taneal Nichols, MacKenzie Myers, and Caylee Burnine. They all know the game of volleyball very well. They are the heart of the team and without them we would not do as well as we do now. There is one player on Junior Varsity that stands out as well: Jenelle Ditto. They show nothing but good character. We have great hitters that are not afraid to spike the ball. They hit every chance they get. Once we learn how to hit the ball really hard, we will be a tough team to defeat.

4. The team has many goals. A few of them consist of learning the basic skills of volleyball, being consistent, and gaining floor experience from this season to improve next year. You do not practice to fail; you practice to progress. There will be nothing but great things in the future. “Practice is the effort that makes winning possible.” From the beginning of the season until now, the team has stepped up and started playing to the best of their ability. They are discovering they can be good if they give their very best. As long as you give your best, no one can ask more of you. Every game is a chance to show how much the team has improved. The season has been extremely busy. Having games everyday can be very hard on an athlete, and that just shows how dedicated we are to the game of volleyball.

5. The Lady Tigers have a lot of supporters. Coach Brad does a great job with coaching the Lady Tigers. He teaches us that we need to work as a team. This is where communication and all of the other fundamental things come to use.

The parents travel up and down the dangerous highways when we have away games and are there cheering us on during home games. Having support like that is wonderful. People may not have had low expectations of us, but we set great expectations for our team.

Anyone can support a team that is winning – it takes no courage. But to stand behind a team to defend a team when it is down and really needs you, that takes a lot of courage. The Lady Tiger volleyball team may have started off a little slowly, but we gradually began to excel. Can you keep up?
