FHU, and the Christian University Experience

Essay by Hannah Hoyt (FHU Class of 2011)

Choosing a college can be tricky, almost like a balancing act. You want to make sure that it has all the academic programs you need, as well as a good location, engaging campus activities, and an atmosphere that will foster not just learning, but the personal growth you need before you begin your journey as “an adult.”

The on-campus activities at Freed-Hardeman University (FHU) are not only continual, but also varied enough for everyone to be able to find something of interest. The University Program Council (UPC), a campus organization run by students for students, is constantly planning events (like a monthly coffee house, and one-time events like the UPC Carnival or concerts). There are also movies shown in the on-campus theatre, sporting events, and many on-campus organizations that students can be involved in.

And of course, there are social clubs. Social clubs are a vital part of campus life at FHU. Members of social clubs have bi-weekly meetings, fun events planned by their officers, the opportunity to participate in intramural sports through their club, and, of course, each member can be a part of their club’s Makin’ Music show.

Although students are provided with a wide variety of activities and clubs, each student must balance their time spent participating in these events with their time spent devoted to their academic studies. Academics at FHU are challenging and engaging, providing each student with the best tools possible for entering their chosen field. Because FHU is a smaller university, class sizes are small, averaging twenty to thirty students. This small class size allows professors to interact more closely with their students and allows students to get the attention that they need to comprehend fully the material.

Academics at FHU have also been enriched by the creation of the iKnow program. This program integrates technology by providing each student with a MacBook or MacBook Pro and an iPod Touch or iPhone. Through the innovative use of this technology, learning at FHU has become fast, fluid, and more engaging then ever before.

Running throughout all of these aspects of FHU is one key element that ties it all together: spiritual growth. As a Christian university, FHU has committed itself to spiritual growth in both academics and campus life. Much of FHU’s social calendar is dedicated to fostering spiritual growth among the entire student body. Social clubs also play a major part in the Christian atmosphere through regular devotionals and service projects.

As I’m sure you can now see, college education is so much more than going to class and obtaining a degree. The four years you will spend in college are the most formative years of your life, shaping who you are and what you will become. So, ask yourself: is Christian education right for you?

FHU has provided all of this for me and more. What first drew me in was my campus visit. Everyone was friendly and had a warm greeting ready for any face, old or new. At Freed-Hardeman, no one is a stranger. The close-knit nature of the student body is in a large part due to the spiritual nature of FHU’s campus. So why not spend one of your LHS-approved college days with us?

Questions for Further Writing:
What are you looking for in a college experience?

How important are your religious convictions in the process of selecting a university?

What would it take to convince you that one university is more "for you" than another?
